Overcoming Procrastination: 7 Strategies for International Students

Procrastination is the act of failing to begin or complete a task by a deadline, whether near or distant. Despite being aware of the impending negative repercussions, the persistent delay is made consciously.

Piers Steels, Ph.D. conducted study and discovered that there are four major factors of procrastinating. They are:

  1. Low reward anticipation
  2. Low success expectancy
  3. A high number of distractions
  4. Inadequate time management

If you’re looking for effective ways to beat procrastination and finish your tasks timely, these 7 tips are for you.

  1. ELIMINATE DISTRACTION

Have you ever attempted to study only to be side tracked by individuals approaching you or by every social media notification that appears on your phone? If you don’t hold yourself accountable, this happens to practically everyone. After you’ve found a good setting, you should avoid distractions by turning off or silencing your phone. Additionally, for some kids, listening to classical music or producing noise can help them focus by drowning out other distractions.

2. SET GOALS YOU CAN REACH

Have you ever tried learning only to be distracted by individuals approaching you or by every social media notification that appears on your phone? If you don’t hold yourself accountable, this happens to practically everyone. After you’ve found a good setting, you should avoid distractions by turning off or silencing your phone. Additionally, for some kids, listening to classical music or producing white noise can help them focus by drowning out other distractions. Setting little goals that are easy to achieve will help you feel more in control and productive, allowing you to break the pattern of chronic procrastination.

3. KNOW WHEN YOU WORK BEST

Are you the type of person who gets out of bed pumped and ready to go? Or are you a night owl who works best and most efficiently after the sun goes down? When you know when to work, you can avoid procrastinating. Take note of when you feel aware during the day. Once you’ve determined your most and least productive times of day, you can plan your most intensive chores for those hours.

4. BE KIND TO YOURSELF

Nobody ever completes their to-do list! Make every effort to meet your deadlines and to celebrate your triumphs. But be realistic: there will always be more to do than hours in the day.

5) BUILD IN BREAKS

Procrastinators sometimes persuade themselves, “I’ll just write that paper in 10 hours.” But, predictably, they fail to stick to this unachievable ambition.

Students that delay tend to hurry through their schoolwork. This increases adrenaline levels and gives the sense that you’re doing excellent work. However, taking regular breaks might increase your productivity and focus. Cornell Health has several suggestions for stimulating study breaks:

-Go for a brisk walk

-Take a power nap

-Listen to music

-Call a friend

-Eat a snack

6. EAT HEALTHY & EXERCISE: Okay, this is an old trick, but limiting sugary drinks and junk food will dramatically improve your performance by keeping your blood sugar levels stable. Fish, nuts, whole grains, and berries are all good choices. And, no, that flapjack from the library vending machine isn’t the healthiest option; it contains more sugar than a Snickers bar! Sport is also a wonderful choice because your body will appreciate any movement after sitting at a computer for long periods of time. Exercise has been found in studies to improve cognitive ability.  Sure, you’re constantly busy, but you can fit in a 30 minute high-intensity interval workout, right?

In conclusion, to completely overcome, divide assignments into smaller groups, set realistic deadlines, employ productivity tools, and create self-discipline for academic success.
