Studying abroad can be exciting and can open the door to a world of opportunities, just like almost everything in life, being an international student has its ups and downs, and there are several challenges international students face abroad. Many international students find it somewhat challenging adjusting to a new and almost entirely different environment, academically and socially; oftentimes this has a ripple effect on the academic performance of the student. In this article, we are going to take you through the four major challenges international students face abroad, make sure you read through as we also provided solutions that would be beneficial to you.
- CULTURE SHOCK
Every country has its culture. The lifestyle choices and practices of the international student may vary greatly from the country where he is going to study. This can leave the student felling upset, bewildered and feeling judged for being different. - ADJUSTING TO THE NEW EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM
Educational systems and practices vary from country to country. Methods of teaching, delivering assignments, examination and group work, are all areas that may be difficult for an international student in the beginning. The teaching and grading system in Nigeria is different from what is obtainable in other countries, this is why it is not uncommon for most international students in their first semester to struggle to maintain their grades. It is not because they ae not putting in the necessary work but rather are finding it hard to adjust to a new educational system. - LANGUAGE BARRIER
In cases where students study in a country in which a foreign language is spoken, it can be difficult for such students to get by even though their courses are being taught in English. Take for instance, a student studying an English medium course in Germany, such student will still find it difficult getting by in the country, as he would need to communicate when he goes to the mall, the movies or even in the church. It is therefore imperative that the student learns the official language for the country where they wish to study. - SETTLING IN
Moving to a new country to study can be quite overwhelming, finding your way around campus, locating the library, lecture hall, connecting with classmates and even making friends are only a bit of the issues an international student is likely to face. This is why most students hang on to the first connection they make whether or not it is the right one.
THE SOLUTION
To help resolve these issues plaguing international students, institutions are partnering with independent education providers all over the world to help ease the transition from one entirely different educational system to another. These education bodies provide pathway programs specifically for international student, who do not meet the admission requirement for gaining direct entry into a university, desire to change their area of specialization for graduate students, provide language classes to bridge language gaps and most importantly help international students transition into their new life as smoothly as possible.
International students are considered students of the parent university from day one but are put in smaller class size of between 15 to 30 students; this way the lecturers are able to identify and relate with each student at a closer range, identify their weaknesses and peculiarities and help each student according to their individual needs.
In the pathway program, students are also taught how to do their research work, and are basically given a proper orientation of the universities educational practices. Also, language classes are provided by the pathway program for students who do not meet the language requirement of the school of their choice.
Career and education advisers who have experiences dealing with international students are also made available.
